History in Tompkins County

Ithaca has environmental consciousness at its core. There are many opportunities on and off campus for students to promote environmental awareness. Students can take on responsibilities on the Ithaca College campus to educate, as well as learn, about our community's collective effort to be stewards of sustainability programs. There are several initiatives launching from community groups such as the Tompkins County Energy  Roadmap that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050. Ultimately, students can get involved through volunteering or internship programs with a number of organizations to help local efforts for promoting and advocating for renewable energy.

Current Status

Tompkins County’s environment and sustainability initiatives increased in 2006 when an employee-based effort to develop sustainable practices within the local government. This movement led the Tompkins County Legislature to authorize the County Administrator to appoint a Tompkins County Sustainability team. This team developed the Tompkins County Sustainability Strategy which focuses on integrating sustainable practices into the Tompkins County government practices during the 2014-2019 time period. Citizen efforts such as Sustainable Tompkins (founded in 2004) are extremely important to the promotion of green practices in Tompkins County Area because their efforts are focused on sustainability outside the government and a multi pronged approach to sustainability. The City of Ithaca is also working on green practices such as using alternative pavements, as well as the Town of Ithaca.
